Alma Artista isn’t just an art gallery and a hub for artisanal creations—it’s a gathering of five friends who decided their creative souls needed more than a WhatsApp group to thrive. What started as a casual dream of 'let’s make cool stuff together' quickly escalated when a shop at the Calheta Marina practically winked at them and said, ‘Why not here?’ And so, they took the plunge, proving that with enough creativity (and maybe some caffeine), even the most artistic daydreams can set sail.

Actually it was a coincidence that I got into pottery 15 years ago after moving from Germany to Madeira.
In Germany I had worked as a fashion designer for many years and in Madeira I found a job in tourism. It was an exciting new experience and I learned a lot, but after a while the desire came up to get creative again, and when a friend introduced me to pottery, it was love at first touch.
I started ceramics as a hobby, but it soon became a deep passion and in 2009 I decided to quit my job to have more time to experiment with clay and learn about the different techniques and ways of modeling, building and decorating. It's an ongoing process and I'm constantly evolving and I am always up for new experiments and challenges.
I love to play with contrasts and the combination of rough, textured surfaces with smooth, shiny glazes on the same object.
The enchanting nature of Madeira, its exotic flowers and plants and its diverse landscapes, shaped by wind, sun and sea, are an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
For a long time I was striving for perfection, because basically I am a very perfectionist person. But the more I got involved with pottery and ceramics, I realized that true beauty is not found in perfection, but in those small imperfections that make each piece unmistakable and unique. What could be more wonderful than a piece of ceramics in which you can still see the process of shaping and the traces of the person who created it? Whoever holds such a ceramic in their hands will feel the life and magic of this work. The clay itself is such a living material and you should still be able to see and feel that in the finished work.
I create my objects with a lot of patience, reflection and attention. Each object has its distinct characteristics. The final result reflects the traces of the creation process and speaks of each touch and manipulation.
Living with beautiful objects, handcrafted with care and thought, reminds us to slow down, creates moments of joy in everyday life, nourishes our soul and helps us reconnect with nature.

Born on the enchanting island of Madeira, I grew up surrounded by the beauty of nature and touched by the sensitivity of art.
At a fragile moment in my life, I found refuge in dance and music, which awakened the power of artistic expression. More recently, I discovered new ways to rediscover myself through painting. Today, I paint as a form of healing, freedom, expression, and self-knowledge.
I identify deeply with abstract art, as it reflects the soul that does not always speak with words, but reveals itself through symbols, shadows and colours. And my soul expresses itself through the colours of the five elements of nature: Water, Earth, Fire, Air and Ether. Each painting is an internal mirror, a silent conversation between who I am and what I feel. I paint to transform the invisible into the visible. And above all, I paint to BE.
With the support of my better half, Nelson, a professional tour guide, we are also partners in art. I express myself with canvases and paints, and he expresses himself with wood and photography.

“Dont grow up, its a trap”
The motto that resonates with me as a person and as an artist. Children often have a simpler way of looking at the world around us. Sometimes maybe a little naive perhaps, but definitely pure. “My child could paint that” is a frase i take as a compliment, the kids are the ones doing it right. As adults we become perfectionists worried about standards. But creating art in my opinion should be freeing, without worrying about the outcome. Maintaining the fun in my creative process is essential to me. Playing with bold colour and shape, i hope to translate an open view at the world. Somewhere along the way often lost, but hopefully found back again through my art.

Carolina
Abstract contemporary artist
After studying design in Berlin, the camera gave way to the canvas and I concentrated entirely on the world of analogue art that I had immersed myself in as a child.
Until now, figuralism has guided my will as an artist and my inspiration to creatively incorporate sculptural elements and realism into my work.
Natural elements such as sand and rocks find their way into certain paintings and create a three-dimensional landscape from a two-dimensional surface.
Nienke
Nienke (and her husband) have chosen a free life, without children. They have traveled extensively, and lived in India in winters for many years. They had their own company together in the Netherlands for 15 years. Nienke designed special unique memorial stones, which were made in India. They also took care of the import, lettering and placement together.
Nienke is now no longer working and she has more time for painting again.Since 2020, Nienke has settled in Madeira part-time with her husband and dog Suze. They commute between the Netherlands and Madeira every three months. Nienke has made many drawings with pencil in the past. After that, India ink and water were favorites. Occasionally a work of art on a larger surface, such as a wall, with acrylic paint.
As a hobby, she paints small children or adults on special occasions. Nienke is not into the abstract, but more into realism and details in her paintings.
Nienke chose a commercial education in her youth. Out of insecurity about turning her talent into a profession, she never followed any special art training. She is self-taught.
Since 2020, watercolor painting has come her way. Animals, especially dogs, cats and birds, are popular subjects. Madeira's newly discovered landscape and wildlife is also a fascinating muse at the moment.

Ana
Daughter of foreigners from the Island of Madeira, residing in Venezuela, the country where I was born, surrounded by a beautiful cultural mix, influenced by Don Manuel who played the accordion and Dona Adelaide embroiderer, weaver and ceramist.
Art has always run through my blood and endowed with a lot of curiosity and exploration of life.
I developed between music, singing, drawing, dance, painting, crafts in its various expressions, clothing design, modeling, acting, writing, photography... With a special passion for nature, and its details, the interest of works made with recycled material also arose.
I am an artist who explores life and art in its diversified creative expressions.
Nelson
Born on the island of Madeira, I am a hiking and jeep tour guide. From an early age, I loved exploring my homeland with family and friends, and I developed a taste for photography and the beauty of nature.
Still connected to my passion for challenging hikes, I have access to little-known places with a high degree of difficulty, and the desire to share the beauty I see, not only through my profession for those who seek me out, but also to make it accessible to the world, motivated me to record these moments and places and share them through photos.
I have a very unique vision acquired through silence and observation of nature, and I express it through photography, trying to show the beauty we can find when we are present.
Camille
Camille is physiotherapist and a photographer at heart.
My passion for photography began when I was a teenager, with horses.
The last three years have been rich in travel.
In 2022, a move to Reunion Island (France) opened my eyes to the power of nature and its different characteristics.
In 2023, a trip to Madagascar, full of emotions and life lessons, enabled me to hone my photographic skills.
Since 2024, after a stay in Corsica, the island of beauty which opened up new possibilities for me to pursue my art, I now live in Montpellier in the south of France.
Why photography?
Photography is a way of capturing moments and emotions, but it's also a way of giving free rein to your imagination and artistic side.
Through my photographs, I try to pay tribute to the nature that surrounds us.
