Why we opened a gallery in Calheta 

Alma Artista was born in Calheta, on Madeira Island, from a simple idea: creating a contemporary art gallery without taking itself too seriously.

We host exhibitions, welcome artists, run creative workshops and believe art should move, question and occasionally make you smile. 

Alma Artista isn’t just an art gallery and a hub for artisanal creations—it’s a gathering of five friends who decided their creative souls needed more than a WhatsApp group to thrive. What started as a casual dream of 'let’s make cool stuff together' quickly escalated when a shop at the Calheta Marina practically winked at them and said, ‘Why not here?’ And so, they took the plunge, proving that with enough creativity (and maybe some caffeine), even the most artistic daydreams can set sail.

What happens here 

The art gallery at Calheta Marina not only brightens up the west side of the island but also ensures no one forgets that culture isn’t just about honey cake and poncha. With monthly events showcasing artists who turn Madeira’s landscapes into explosions of color, the gallery makes it clear that art is also a high-stakes sport: the risk of falling in love with a painting and having to negotiate with your wallet. It’s living proof that Madeira isn’t just about spectacular nature—it’s overflowing with creativity too.

Art, encounters and paint-stained hands 

The vision of Alma Artista? Simple: showcase the work of permanent artists while giving guest exhibitors their moment in the spotlight—because everyone deserves a chance to shine. Think of it as a creativity Airbnb: some stay for the long haul, others just pop in to leave their mark. The goal is to bring art and craft exhibitions to Calheta, proving that this spot isn’t just about sun and sea, but also about talent and imagination. The motto here is clear: get inspired, admire, and, if you can, take something home (preferably something that fits in your suitcase). 

The Alma Artista gallery was created by blending our passion for art with positive energies. Each space is carefully designed, respecting the principles of feng shui, to create perfect harmony between the artworks and their surroundings. 

The effect is so noticeable that we’ve lost count of the compliments from visitors!
